AboutNexGard
NexGard is a monthly chewable tablet that protects dogs against fleas and ticks. It kills adult fleas before they can lay eggs, helping break the flea life cycle, and protects against several common tick species that can transmit disease.
It's one of the most widely prescribed flea and tick preventives in the US, available by weight-based dosing for dogs from 4 lbs up to 121 lbs.
How it works
NexGard's active ingredient, afoxolaner, is absorbed into the dog's bloodstream after the chew is eaten. Fleas and ticks ingest the medication when they bite, which disrupts their nervous system and kills them. Protection lasts a full month per dose.
Dosing and weight bands
NexGard is dosed by weight, with four chew sizes:
- 4–10 lbs
- 10.1–24 lbs
- 24.1–60 lbs
- 60.1–121 lbs
Dogs over 121 lbs require a vet-directed combination of chewables.
Safety notes
NexGard requires a prescription in the US. Common side effects can include vomiting, dry/flaky skin, diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Dogs with a history of seizures or neurological disorders should be evaluated by a veterinarian before use. Always confirm dosing with your vet, especially for dogs near a weight-band boundary.
