Premiums usually rise with age

Starting coverage while your pet is young often costs less over the life of the policy.

Pre-existing conditions are rarely covered

Anything noted before coverage starts is usually excluded, so earlier is better.

Waiting periods apply

Most plans need a few days to a few weeks before coverage begins, so it has to be in place before you need it.

Pet insurance plans, side by side

Plans available in the US. Your price depends on your pet, so each insurer quotes you directly.

Plan details are summaries. See each insurer's policy for full terms, exclusions and availability in your state. VetRxNow is not an insurance company or agent. We may earn a fee when you get a quote or buy through our links, and it never affects rankings. How we make money

Two ways plans are built

Annual deductible or per-condition deductible?

An annual deductible resets every policy year, while a per-condition deductible is paid once per condition for as long as you're covered. Which costs less depends on whether your pet has one-off problems or something ongoing.

Annual deductible

Pay it once a year

You cover the first part of your vet bills each policy year. After that, the plan reimburses its share of every covered bill until the year resets. Many of these plans let you pick your deductible, reimbursement and annual limit.

Example: a $3,000 vet bill, $250 deductible, 80% reimbursement. ($3,000 - $250) x 80%= $2,200 back
Per-condition deductible

Pay it once per condition

You pay the deductible once for each new condition, then never again for that condition, even years later. It tends to suit pets with ongoing issues like allergies or diabetes. A new, unrelated condition starts a new deductible.

Example: a $3,000 vet bill, $200 deductible, 90% reimbursement. ($3,000 - $200) x 90%= $2,520 back

More back at claim time usually means a higher monthly premium, so compare both numbers. Examples are illustrations only, not quotes.

Plain-English guide

Four terms that decide what you pay

$

Deductible

What you pay each year (or per condition) before the insurer starts reimbursing.

%

Reimbursement

The share of a covered bill you get back after the deductible, usually 70% to 90%.

โ†‘

Annual limit

The most the plan will pay in a year. Some plans have no limit at all.

โฑ

Waiting period

How many days after you sign up before coverage starts. Plans pay for care only after this wait, so sign up before you need it.

Questions

Good to know.

Does pet insurance cover prescription medications?

Many plans reimburse prescriptions for covered conditions. Check each plan's terms, since some exclude certain medications or preventive products.

Can I use my own vet?

Most US pet insurance plans reimburse you for care at any licensed vet. Some plans can also pay the vet directly at checkout.

What if my pet already has a condition?

Pre-existing conditions are usually excluded. Some insurers will cover curable conditions after a symptom-free period, so read each policy's definition.

Why don't you show a price for every plan?

Premiums depend on your pet's species, breed, age and where you live, so a single number would be misleading. Each insurer gives you a real quote in a couple of minutes.

Is VetRxNow an insurance company?

No. We're an independent comparison site. Quotes and policies come directly from the insurer, and we never sell your information.
